Are there good people?

This past summer I had the privilege of spending a weekend with a group of junior high students. My talks from that weekend are posted here and here. This question came during a time of Q&A after my talk on why God allows evil.

If you are interested in having me speak at your church, camp, or youth group, click on the Endorsements & Speaking page to see my list of topics and contact me at Speaking Requests or email me at contact@coffeehousequestions.com. You can select a topic from the list or suggest your own. I am happy to help in any way I can. God bless!

If God, Why Evil?

This is probably the most common objection to Christianity and the most difficult to answer. Watch as Ryan walks through different responses with a group of junior high students.

Resurrection: Real? Or Real Dumb?

What is more important in Christianity than the resurrection?

Pretty much nothing!

Paul is pretty clear in 1 Corinthians 15. If Jesus did not rise from the dead then our preaching is in vain, our faith is in vain, we are misrepresenting God, our faith is futile, we are still in our sins, and we are the most to be pitied. Verse 32 even says, “If the dead are not raised, ‘Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die.'” Those are some very strong words!

However, if Jesus did rise from the dead, then it changes everything. That is why answering the question as to the truth of the resurrection is probably the most important thing we can do aside from putting our trust in Jesus.

“Resurrection: Real? Or Real Dumb?” is designed to help people see that the resurrection is real and that we should put our trust in Jesus. It really does make the most sense when looking at all of the possible explanations compared to the evidence as you see here.

So, I encourage you to watch the talk and decide for yourself which explanation makes the most sense.

A Tactical Approach to Evolution (video)

A few months back, I was invited to a very unique church group. Though I have never seen a church host a group meeting like this one, after leaving I realized that it is probably something every church should have. And if your church won’t create one, consider starting it up at someone’s house.

The group is called Persuade and is hosted every week by Orange County Church in Tustin, CA. This church has a speaker each week (usually a church member) discuss an important or controversial issue. Before I was invited to discuss on creation vs. evolution, they had already covered the kalam, the resurrection, the argument from contingency, and abortion. At the end of every talk, which is about 30 minutes, the audience is encouraged to ask questions and raise objections. In fact, the goal is to stump the speaker.

I was told that they normally spend at least an hour with the questions and objections. They turned out to be serious when they followed up my talk with an hour and fifteen minutes of questions and objections. You could say that the audience was very prepared with questions they had either researched or encountered in personal conversations.

As someone who travels to train churches and students to defend the Christian faith, this was so encouraging. This group had such a yearning to know and defend the truth. They took 1 Peter 3:15 seriously in their desire to always be ready to give a defense for the hope that they have. It was a wonderful privilege to join Persuade that evening and help believers think critically about creation and evolution. I hope that you too are encouraged by the video below to start something like this with fellow believers.

What questions or objections do you have on the topic of creation and evolution? Comment below!

Human Value and the Image of God – Truth Matters TV

I had a great time joining Truth Matters TV for the second time. The first time on the show we talked about the evidence for the resurrection. This time the topic was the Imago Dei and how it changes what we care about and why we should care. Watch below to see how the image of God becomes the foundation for human value, human rights, and much more!

Is The New Testament Reliable?

One of the most exciting parts of my job is the work I am able to do with MAVEN and their groundbreaking approach to mission trips. Brett Kunkle, founder of MAVEN, has created a one-of-a-kind experience that immerses participants in real-life engagement in apologetics, theology, worldview and evangelism in Berkeley, California, and Salt Lake City, Utah. These trips are life changing for students. Their faith is tested, and for some, they are able to share the Gospel for the first time. The students’ confidence grows and they come home with a new excitement to discuss their faith with those around them.

The video below is one of six training sessions the students attended in preparation for their trip to Berkeley. I discussed five common objections to the reliability of the New Testament. 1) It was written long after the time of Jesus. 2) It is not supported by historical evidence. 3) It was messed up and changed over time. 4) It was written by biased Christians. 5) It contains miracles and miracles are impossible. I finished by giving practical tips on how to talk to people who think the Bible is dumb.

I hope you enjoy this talk and contact MAVEN to take your students on this one-of-a-kind experience.

2018 Imperial Valley Apologetics Conference Recap

I had the great privilege of speaking at the 2018 Imperial Valley Apologetics Conference this past weekend in El Centro, CA. I feel bad that it came at the expense of my friend, Tim Barnet, getting sick. But when he asked me to cover for him, I was happy that my Saturday was open.

During the day-long conference, I gave three talks and had a Q&A session. My talks included: Does God exist? Are science and faith compatible? Is the New Testament reliable? IMG_4497

Thank you to Calvary Chapel Bible College El Centro and everyone in attendance. You all are doing an incredible work, and you made it a very special day. And thank you to the visual team for putting together this short recap video from my first talk on the existence of God. You guys were amazing!

What questions are high school students asking?

I was invited to speak at the Heartland Church Student Night in Indianapolis back on January 10th, 2018. They had me begin with a short 15-minute talk followed by 50 minutes of text-in Q&A. We were able to get through 20 questions during our time together and I have listed them below the video with the point in which they were asked. I hope you enjoy it and don’t forget to comment below!

Discussing the Resurrection of Jesus on Truth Matters TV

About two years ago I was able to connect with Ratio Christi and partner with their great work on college campuses. This last summer I gave my talk on world religions at the Ratio Christi chapter at Colorado State University. And now, most recently, I had the privilege of discussing the resurrection of Jesus on Truth Matters TV. Watch my recent appearance below and check out the link for all of their other shows.
