One of the main questions I get from students relates the fact that they don’t see God. If God exists, why doesn’t he reveal himself to us? Well… He has! I think people don’t see God because they aren’t looking for Him. I think back to the book by Nabeel Qureshi, Seeking Allah, Finding Jesus. In the book, Nabeel details a few of the dreams he had. After receiving the dream, he found a way for them to be interpreted. The interpretation fit his life situation perfectly and he realized that God was speaking to him through the dream. When I read one of the dreams from the book to my students, I asked them what they would do if they had a dream like that. Their responses were either that they would tell some friends about how crazy it was or forget about it. I feel like that is how most of us are. God reveals himself to us in an incredible way and we either say, “That was cool” or we forget about it. We don’t realize that it was God speaking to us.
We also don’t see God in the little things because to us, they are just normal. Acts 14:17 says, “He has shown kindness by giving rain from heaven and crops in their seasons; he provides you with plenty of food and fills your hearts with joy.” When is the last time you thought about God’s kindness when it rained or when you had food. That is God revealing himself to us!
I also asked my students why we have the ability to see, hear, speak, feel, and taste. It is possible that we could have been created without those abilities, but life would be miserable. Imagine a life where nothing had taste, everything was dark without sight, and we couldn’t communicate. God has given us these abilities so that we can be in relationship and that we can have joy in life. God wants us to have fun, not just sit in darkness and alone.
God is revealing himself to us, but we need to open our eyes to see it! We have to be willing and open to the fact that God can and does reveal Himself to us. When we have an open heart, we will see God. He has hidden Himself to that we choose to seek Him. He wants us to want to know Him more.
